UV&S to Participate in OKMGMA Fall Conference

UV&S to Participate in 2009 AMIA Conference

Underground Vaults and Storage, Inc.  (UV&S) will participate in the upcoming AMIA (Association of Moving Image Archivists) Conference in St. Louis, MO. Vendor booths will be open to participants on Thursday, November 5, 2009 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and Friday, November 6, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The 2009 AMIA Conference will be held at the Millennium Hotel in St. Louis.

UV&S Expands Offerings to Include Digitized Microfilm, Microfiche, and Aperture Cards

Hutchinson, KS – Underground Vaults and Storage, Inc. (UV&S) recently purchased its second microforms scanner in an effort to better serve clients. The scanner, a Konica Minolta MS7000MKII, will digitize microfilm, microfiche, and aperture cards.

UV&S Vice President of Operations Jim Ontjes pointed out that with this machine “we are now able to provide clients a digitized image of their microform storage that can be uploaded onto a CD or immediately emailed to a customer needing quick access to their stored records.”

Ontjes explained “We have been providing this service to a single client for the past four years. The acquisition of this additional machine will give clients the option of receiving digitized images in a short period of time without needing to send microforms to an outside vendor for duplication.”

This new machine will aid current UV&S clients storing microforms. Clients interested in utilizing this service should call their facility service contact or customer service representative.

It’s Easy Being Green – We’ve Been that Way for 50 Years…

Over the past several years, businesses have been consistently beefing up their green credentials by building eco-conscious factories and sponsoring initiatives that make clear their commitment to the environmental cause. “Going Green” has become a buzz word heard in commercials, plastered on retail packaging, and even used in company slogans with the hopes of increasing profits.

Underground Vaults and Storage, Inc. has operated as a “green” company since 1959, before being green was even considered popular. By simply reusing the 38 acres mined out by the Hutchinson Salt Company, we are recycling space. Our underground facility requires no air conditioning or gas furnace heating. We remain at a constant temperature of 68 degrees throughout the year simply due to our location in the earth. The salt in the air “naturally” preserves our paper records and helps us maintain a level of humidity averaging a steady 45%. All lighting underground is fluorescent, which is generally considered to use more than 50 percent less energy and to last several times longer. In addition, we paint the walls and ceilings underground white in order to use less lighting and electricity.

When creating concrete floors underground, we mix salt fines with concrete instead of bringing in sand. Most of our employees use three wheeled bicycles underground for transportation in addition to simply walking. Our carts and forklifts are electric, and our heavier equipment is powered by environmentally friendly biodiesel. When equipment breaks down, we simply fix the problem underground. Repairing machinery onsite is cheaper than hauling the broken machine topside piece by piece and having it shipped somewhere for repair. Our method is also less expensive and more eco-friendly than purchasing a new machine which would have to be brought in piece by piece due to the space available in the mine shaft.

A report by Havas Media found that of 20,000 consumers surveyed, 80% of respondents are more likely to purchase from brands that have adopted environmentally sustainable practices. 48% of these consumers were even willing to pay more for sustainable goods and services. Stunning research…wonder if those same consumers would be even more loyal to a company who has been committed to preserving the world’s resources since 1959? The Underground Vaults & Storage (UV&S) Twitter page was officially introduced this week in an ongoing effort to keep clients and business partners informed of their latest services and developments.

Ranked as one of the 50 most popular websites worldwide (by Alexa Internet, Inc.), Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows users to read and provide short updates of 140 characters or less. The UV&S Twitter page can be viewed by going to http://twitter.com/undergroundvlts.

Marketing Specialist Nancy Young stated “UV&S hopes to broaden its reach to clients by staying abreast of changes in information technology. Our membership with Twitter will complement the traditional methods we have in place to inform our clients of information about our company.”

UV&S to Participate in the 72nd Annual KIOGA Convention in Wichita, KS

Underground Vaults and Storage, Inc. will host a booth at the 72nd Annual Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Associaion (KIOGA) Convention to be held August 16-18, 2009 at the Airport Hilton in Wichita, KS. Highlights of the event include a meeting session entitled “Energy Policy and Political Reality -A Changing Perspective” which will be moderated by KIOGA President Edward Cross. U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, Kansas 1st District Congressman Jerry Moran, Kansas 2nd District Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins, and 4th District Congressman Todd Tiahrt will serve as panelists on a discussion regarding how the decisions of the Obama Administration and the Democratic Congress will impact businesses. Climate changes, regulatory issues, and and tax issues will also be discussed by the panel.

Another highlight of the convention includes the Monday evening 60s and 70s Soiree featuring performers from Cabaret Oldtown. Ladies are invited to attend the Rock and Roll Brunch held at the Crestview County Club on Tuesday, August 18th. UV&S Salt Queens Ride in July 4th Patriots Parade

Miss Salt Queen Jill Ferrell and Ms Salt Queen Christy Grant appeared in the recent HutchFest Patriots Parade held on July 4th, 2009 in Hutchinson, KS. Ferrell won the title of Miss Salt Queen at Underground Vaults and Storage’s recent Salt Queen Celebration held 650 feet below Hutchinson on April 24, 2009. Grant won the title of Ms Salt Queen the same evening. The celebration was held to celebrate 50 years in business for Underground Vaults and Storage, Inc. Contestants between the ages of 18-21 competed for the title of Miss Salt Queen, and contestants between the ages of 50-53 competed for the title of Ms Salt Queen.

Employees of Underground Vaults and Storage, Inc. graciously volunteered to walk in the parade and hand out salt water taffy to the parade audience. Grand Marshall for the Patriots Parade was astronaut Joe Engel.

UV&S would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Bob Horyna for allowing us to use his vehicles during this parade. Horyna extended the use of his 1957 Ford Fairlane convertible, and he also offered the use of his 1965 Chrysler convertible. This car was the same type of car used in the television show “Fantasy Island”. UV&S would also like to thank the employees who volunteered to walk and hand out candy during the parade.

UV&S Welcomes Intern Erin Falter

Underground Vaults and Storage, Inc. recently brought on intern Erin Falter of Hutchinson, KS. Falter, a business management and marketing major at Baker Universtiy, has been working at the salt mine location and corporate offices of UV&S. Falter has performed various duties for UV&S that will aid her in learning more about the records storage business.

Marketing Specialist Nancy Young stated, “It is always positive to share what you have learned in your experiences in business with others. I have enjoyed spending time with Erin, and I know that she will experience much success in her future endeavors. “

At the conclusion of Falter’s internship, she will return to Baker University with plans to graduate in the spring.

Falter pointed out that she “appreciated the time and patience that the employees showed me during my time here at UV&S. I am thankful for the opportunity to have an internship with a company like UV&S.”
